Longford Park

Hi Eddie

Sue here.  During a valuation visit you made to my daughters home recently we had a conversation about Longford Park Pets’ Corner and you asked me to send some details about it.

In 2014 Trafford Council announced that funding for Pets’ Corner would cease and Pets’ Corner would close. Many people were upset by this as it had been a feature of the park for a long time and local people across several generations recall their visits fondly.

In response, a group of volunteers undertook to keep Pets’ Corner open. With the hard work and dedication of the volunteers it has continued to delight people of all ages but especially the very young.

Pets’ Comer is home to two goats, two Belgian hares, two cockerels and several chickens, six ducks and six rabbits. There is also a dovecote and lots of doves.

It is open 7 days a week throughout the year and the constant stream of children, parents, grandparents and primary school groups bears testimony to the continuing attraction of this much loved feature.

Twice a day all the animals are fed and their pens, stalls and hutches are cleaned by a team of volunteers. The finance for the food, animal bedding, vet bills, CCTV and other costs are met by donations from the general public, supplemented by a number of volunteer run events with craft stalls and tombola. Some animals are sponsored  and donations of vegetables are also always very welcome.

It’s a struggle to recruit and retain volunteers as it is hard work and the animals need care no matter what the weather but it is hoped that Longford Park Pets’ Corner can continue to remain open for many years to come.
