Located right in the heart of Chorlton, we’ve been serving the local community selling books, cards and gifts since May 1983. The shop is an independent business, still owed and run by the Johnson family who established it over forty years ago.

506-508 Wilbraham Road is part of an Edwardian row of ten shops. Just prior to becoming a bookshop, it had been Chapman’s Tobacconists, complete with an array of wooden shelving for different tobacco brands.

Today, alongside the latest ever-changing selection of fiction and non-fiction in paperback and hardback – including a popular, vibrant children’s section – we stock a selection of Jellycat toys, stamps and book tokens, plus we’re constantly refreshing our wide variety of notebooks and greetings cards and sale book titles. We also offer a free book ordering service, with titles generally arriving the next day.

We’re more than happy to cater for larger orders, too, and regularly supply local schools, book clubs and businesses, offering bulk discounts whenever we can. (Last year, for instance, we sourced the stock for an entire specialist library for a city centre software developer.)

Down the decades we’ve welcomed many famous faces through our door, from Coronation Street stars (Doris Speed, Chris Gasgoyne) and Manchester music luminaries (Tony Wilson, Bernard Sumner, Morrissey and a good few ex-members of The Fall) to sporting legends (Denis Law and even the entire England cricket team, lead by David Gower, fresh from Old Trafford in their whites to buy an address book). Poet Jackie Kay and scriptwriter Russell T Davies have been regulars in their time, and we once had Bono from U2 in for an afternoon. No, really.

We like to think our shop is small but perfectly formed, and we pride ourselves on its calm, friendly atmosphere. In the present climate, we’re very much a ‘use it or lose it’ local business, so we’re delighted to say that the Chorlton community are still keeping us busy after all these years.
