9 traditions to bring luck when moving into a new home..
How do you greet a magpie? Would you ever walk under a ladder? How would you feel if you broke a mirror? There are any number of superstitions and traditions pretty much embedded into our daily lives, but did you know there are more than a few relating directly to moving day?
From scattering salt to burning sage, there are moving-in traditions and superstitions across the globe. While there’s no suggestion from us that any of these might actually bring good luck and a happy life, they’re fun to know about – and you never know…
- Exit where you entered.
This is an Irish tradition, which says that the day you move in you should be careful to only exit your new home through the same door you entered, otherwise you may never feel settled.. Luckily it’s only on moving in day you need to worry about this, or life could get quite complicated.
- Sprinkle salt across the front door
This dates back to ancient times, when people believed that sprinkling salt in the doorway would prevent witches from entering your abode. It’s similar to one of the tenets of feng shui, too, where sprinkling salt around the periphery of your home will create an energetic dome and detour any negative energies.
- Burn sage
Otherwise known as smudging, this is a tradition rooted in Native American beliefs, where smudging will clear any bad energy left behind by the previous occupants.
- Buy yourself an orange tree
According to Chinese tradition, it’s good luck to bring an orange tree into a new home. They also smell good, so win win.
- Carry uncooked rice
In pagan superstition it is believed that carrying uncooked rice when you step through the threshold of your new house brings fortune and means that no one will go hungry under your roof.
- Scatter coins on the floor
If you have any loose change, then scatter it across the living room floor on the moving day to bring prosperity and positive energy to the household.
- Ring a bell
The sound of bells clears the space from stagnant energy and makes room for new and positive energies to enter the house. We’re pretty sure a doorbell won’t count, so if you like the sound of this tradition, find yourself a bell before moving day,
- Leave your old broom and mop behind
We like this one, it makes sense! It’s an old tradition that when moving to a new home, you don’t bring your old broom with you, as it carries all the dirt and dust from your previous house. Start fresh with a new broom, and don’t sully your new home with the detritus of your old one.
- Throw a housewarming party
Our favourite new home tradition. It’s not just about having fun with friends and celebrating a new home, a housewarming party, filling your rooms with friends, food and laughter, warms the house through with positive energy, as well as literally warming the rooms.
