Five minutes with… Jon from Blossom Flowers

Here at JP & Brimelow, we are all about supporting our local community in Chorlton & Didsbury. We are lucky to be surrounded by many passionate business owners, from florists to barbers and quirky coffee shops.

We chatted to Jon McGrath from Blossom Flowers in Chorlton about his budding business and his thoughts on the local area. Keep on reading to find out more…

Can you tell us a bit more about Blossom?

In 2013, the previous owner of Blossom decided to sell up while we were working there, and it gave us the perfect opportunity to have our own family business and develop the brand. Blossom is mainly a florist shop focusing on local deliveries, weddings, funerals and contract work. We also try to buy as many British grown flowers as we can, on a seasonal basis.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to incorporate more house plants into their home?

I’d start by thinking about the room itself and how much light you get, if you have a room that gets a lot of light your plant choices will be different to a room that has a lack of natural light.

Plants that thrive in light rooms include carnivorous plants such as the Pitcher Plant or Venus Fly Trap. For rooms with less light, I’d recommend a Monstera (Cheese Plant), Peace Lily and most of the Fern Family. Depending on the look you want to go for you can choose larger or smaller plants to draw attention or just add a touch of greenery to the space.

What are the benefits of fresh flowers and house plants?

House plants are known for lowering stress, improving your mood, reducing fatigue and easing respiratory issues. You can have air purifying plants such as Peace Lily, Aloe Vera and Snake Plants (also said to aid sleep). Flowers are great for cosmetics and adding bright colours to a room, instantly boosting your mood.

What are the best low maintenance plants for busy professionals who may forget to water them?

There are so many easy-care plants available, I would always recommend a Peace Lily as they will tell you when they want watering by drooping, returning to normal an hour or so later. Succulents are always a great choice as they require very little watering throughout the year.

I would recommend speaking to your plant seller or florist and asking about how to water, as certain plants prefer watering from underneath whereas with others it’s not so much of an issue.

What is your favourite thing about Chorlton and what would you say to someone thinking of moving here?

There are lots of independent shops, bars, cafes and restaurants who all work closely and we have all formed great relationships over the years. There are also plenty of green spaces on your doorstep to enjoy in and around Chorlton, even better when we actually get the sunshine!

Thanks, John!
