Welcome to the Neighbourhood: Gannon Works Architects Practice..

A loft conversion is one of the smartest ways to add space and value to your home — and Gannon Works are experts at making it happen with style and sensitivity.

Take Dormer House in Heaton Chapel, Stockport — a stunning example of how a detached, Arts & Crafts property was transformed to meet the evolving needs of a growing family, while carefully retaining its unique character.

The clients, who moved into their dream four-bedroom home back in 2022, were met with a common issue: the dreaded box room. Perfect for a home office, but not quite fit for purpose as a family bedroom — especially with doting grandparents frequently visiting their new grandchild. The solution? A beautifully thought-out loft conversion, led by Gannon Works as part of a larger, phased renovation.

A Cleverly Designed Transformation

To unlock the home’s hidden potential, Gannon Works raised the roof by just half a metre at both the eaves and ridge. While that might sound like a small change, it had a huge impact internally, creating far more usable floor space.

They also converted the roof from a hipped to a gable-end design, adding three rear-facing dormers that now frame calming views of tree canopies and the Victorian roofscape beyond. The result? A whole new level — literally — with two generous bedrooms and a full bathroom, blending seamlessly with the original home both in form and function.

Smart Design Meets Practical Execution

Planning was key. G/W used their deep knowledge of policy and process to ensure the project started on solid ground. Since the changes were visible from the street, full planning permission was required. Materials were thoughtfully chosen with the client — from rosemary tiles to standing seam zinc and aluminium-framed windows, every detail was considered to complement the existing structure.

Fire regulations and building control were met with ease thanks to robust planning, and three vetted contractors were invited to quote, ensuring quality and cost control from the outset. Most importantly, the build finished on time and within budget — a testament to Gannon Works’ meticulous project oversight.

“Most British homes have more potential than you think,” says the G/W team.
“Even if your house is semi-detached or terraced, options like dormers or lowered ceilings can create head height without needing to raise the roof.”

So, if you’re running out of room but not ready to move — speak to Gannon Works. They’ll help you unlock the hidden potential in your home, from loft to ground floor and everything in between.
