Meet Our Local Community – Chorlton Bikes.
CHORLTON BIKES
Moving things. Connecting people. Making a difference.
At JP & Brimelow, we’re passionate about the communities we work in and proud to shine a light on the people and organisations doing great things across South Manchester.
Chorlton Bikes is a brilliant example of local people using a simple idea, the humble bicycle to make a genuine and practical difference to the lives of others.
Based in South Manchester, Chorlton Bikes is a Community Benefit Society using cargo bikes, trishaws and an ever-growing network of volunteers to support local people, communities and organisations.

What began as a grassroots response during the pandemic has grown into an inspiring community-focused organisation combining sustainable transport with practical support for people who need it.
BIKES THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE
There is so much more to Chorlton Bikes than getting from A to B.
Through Emmeline’s Pantry, the team collects surplus food from local supermarkets, independent grocers and allotments, helping redistribute it to people experiencing food insecurity.
Then there’s Bikes4Refugees, which collects pre-loved bicycles and helps get them refurbished and back on the road. For refugees and asylum seekers, having access to a bike can make a huge difference. Helping people get to education, work, appointments and leisure activities.
ShopNDrop is another fantastic initiative, helping customers of Unicorn Grocery who face barriers to doing their shopping in person.
These are simple ideas with a very real impact.
CONNECTING PEOPLE
Chorlton Bikes also uses its trishaws to help older people and those with limited mobility get out and about and enjoy their local community.
The team regularly works with Together Dementia Support at Alexandra Park, providing opportunities for people to enjoy a ride, fresh air and time outdoors.
It’s a brilliant reminder that transport isn’t simply about moving from one place to another. It can also be about connection, independence and quality of life.
SUPPORTING OUR NHS
And the work doesn’t stop there.
Chorlton Bikes’ cargo bikes transport more than 300,000 NHS samples every year, providing an important local healthcare logistics service.
By using cargo bikes rather than traditional vehicles, the organisation is also helping reduce emissions, with its NHS work saving around 6 tonnes of CO₂ compared with a petrol vehicle and 2.5 tonnes compared with an electric vehicle.
That’s a pretty impressive contribution from a fleet of bikes.
A COMMUNITY EFFORT
Behind everything Chorlton Bikes does is a committed team of paid riders, volunteers, members and community partners.
It is that collective effort that allows the organisation to continue growing and supporting more people across South Manchester.

Chorlton Bikes has also recently been nominated for the King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS), the highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK, recognising the contribution of volunteer-led organisations to their communities.
The organisation has also received recognition through the Best of Manchester Awards, celebrating people, groups and organisations helping make Manchester more connected, supportive and sustainable.
LOCAL PEOPLE. LOCAL IMPACT.
What we particularly love about Chorlton Bikes is that its impact is incredibly local.
It is about looking at the community around you, identifying where there are challenges and asking a simple question:
“What can we do to help?”
Sometimes the answer is a cargo bike full of food.
Sometimes it’s a refurbished bicycle that gives someone greater independence.
Sometimes it’s a trishaw ride through Alexandra Park.
And sometimes it’s transporting an NHS sample safely and sustainably across Manchester.
Different journeys, but the same underlying purpose.
MOVING FORWARD
At the heart of Chorlton Bikes is a wonderfully simple idea:

Use bikes to move things, connect people and make our community a better place to live.
We think that’s something worth celebrating.
At JP & Brimelow, we’re proud to support the independent organisations, community groups and local people who make South Manchester such a brilliant place to live, work and grow.
Chorlton Bikes is making a difference. One journey, one person and one community at a time.
Cheers
