Meet Our Local Community – Fuel Cafe Bar..
Fuel has been a part of Withington for over 20 years. We’re proud of what we’ve built here: a space that feels less like a commercial business and more like a second home for the people who come through our door.
Whether you’re popping in for breakfast, settling in with a laptop and coffee, filling a craving for something warm and filling, or coming for live music in the evening, Fuel is built on one simple principle: be welcoming, be affordable, and be genuinely part of the community.
By Day: The Heart of Withington
Walk in during the day and you’ll see why people keep coming back.

We serve fresh, hearty vegetarian and vegan food at prices that won’t break the bank. A substantial breakfast will set you back under £7. A full sharing platter of Vegan or Veggie Mezze, complete with Haloumi, hummus, olives, salad, sweet potato wedges, falafel, and toasted pita bread comes in at just £15. Main courses like the Fuel Burger, Falafel Burgers, vegetarian Haloumi Fish and Chips, and Palak Paneer are less than £10. Our famous desserts include our homemade vegan cakes – Chocolate, Vanilla, and Caramel Coconut – along with our homemade vegan Brownies and Flapjacks.
But it’s not just about good value. It’s about atmosphere.
Our cafe has a wonderfully cosy, woody aesthetic — nothing pretentious, just comfortable and inviting. Free WiFi, board games, soft lighting, and genuinely friendly staff create the kind of space where you can settle in for hours. Students study. Friends meet. Groups host meetings. Locals drop in for their regular coffee, smoothies, and food.
The upstairs room isn’t just for evening gigs; we host workshops, exhibitions, and weekly yoga classes—creating a genuine community hub where people gather to learn, create, and connect. It’s the sort of place that makes a neighbourhood feel like a neighbourhood.
By Night: A Hub for Manchester’s Music Scene
When evening comes, Fuel transforms into something electric.

Our upstairs space is a proper live music venue hosting the full spectrum of contemporary music—rock, folk, punk, metal, jazz, electronic, hip-hop. You’ll find everything from intimate solo performances to multi-stage festivals. The diversity is the point: we were recently one of two stages hosting the Neck of the Woods Festival, a 5th-birthday celebration with 20 bands over a single day. We’ve also hosted Withington Pride, international touring acts, Jazz Nights, Jam Nights, and regular slots for Manchester’s emerging and established musicians.
There’s no velvet rope, no algorithm deciding what matters. Just live music in an intimate setting where artists and audiences actually connect. Jam Nights, Comedy Nights, DJ sets, all-dayers, or even private events —the programming reflects what our community wants.
A Proper Independent
What we’ve always tried to do is stay genuinely independent.
Our beer selection features local ales, and traditional international brews, the most popular and affordable being our Fuel Lager. Our alcohol mixer doubles are unmatched in cost in all of Withington. This is what we believe independent Manchester should look like: a business that’s built a real community around itself, that keeps prices fair, that values its regulars, and that stays true to what it actually believes in.
