Give your front door an autumn makeover: 5 easy ways to boost your home’s kerb appeal..
Looking for easy ways to improve your home’s kerb appeal this autumn? From beautiful seasonal wreaths and colourful planters to cosy lanterns and a freshly painted front door, a few simple touches can transform your entrance into a warm and welcoming sight as the days get shorter.
I know I risk sounding like I am banging on the same drum, but when you are selling your home – first impressions really do count. Yes, the potential buyer may have seen your home online and decided it has potential, but the chances are they are visiting several properties over a short period all of which tick their ‘practical needs’ boxes, and yours is just one of them. To stand out, it’s important you give your home some positive visual impact from the front door on – and make it just a little more memorable than the rest, maybe!
Kerb appeal starts from the moment your viewers arrive and autumn is a good time to give your front door a little attention. As the leaves turn, the evenings draw in and we start spending more time indoors, it’s easy to forget about the entrance to our homes. Yet it’s the first thing visitors see when they arrive and the first impression potential buyers get when they view your property online or in person.
The good news is that you don’t need to spend a fortune or embark on a major DIY project to make a difference. A handful of well-chosen accessories, a little seasonal colour and some lighting can create a welcoming entrance that looks beautiful throughout the autumn months. I am not suggesting you go full Hallowe’en (although adding a pumpkin on the day itself wouldn’t look out of place!) but instead lean in a little to the colours and textures of autumn – warm and welcoming.
Here are five easy ways to give your front door an autumn makeover.
1. Add an autumn wreath
An autumnal wreath is one of the simplest ways to bring seasonal charm to your front door. Forget the traditional Christmas greenery for now and look for designs featuring dried leaves, berries, seed heads, eucalyptus, pine cones or warm rust and copper tones.
The trick is to choose a wreath that complements your front door rather than competes with it. A colourful design can look lovely against a dark blue or green door, while a more neutral arrangement will sit beautifully against classic black, white or wooden finishes.
Choose something that celebrates the season and you’ll be able to enjoy it right through to the start of winter.
2. Give your doorstep a lift with a new doormat
It’s a small detail, but a smart doormat can make a surprising difference to the overall appearance of your entrance.
Your doormat needs to work as hard as it looks good. Choose a sturdy coir mat or a hard-wearing outdoor design that will cope with the changing weather. Just a quick Google search will reveal many options – and of course whatever you choose you can take with you to your new home!
Before buying a new one, take a moment to check the proportions. A mat that looks too small for the doorway can make the whole entrance feel a little unbalanced, while one that’s too large may overwhelm a narrow step.
Before you lay down your new mat, give the entrance a good clean. Sweep away leaves, remove cobwebs and give the doorstep a wash before putting your new mat in place. It’s a quick job that instantly makes everything feel fresher. Don’t forget to check again before viewings – spider webs and windblown leaves are never appealing!
3. Introduce autumn colour with planters
If you have space either side of your front door, a pair of planters is a lovely way to frame the entrance and introduce some seasonal colour.
Chrysanthemums, heucheras, ornamental grasses, cyclamen and compact evergreen plants can all bring interest to autumn displays.
You don’t necessarily need matching pots, either. Two or three of different sizes and materials when arranged together have a great impact. Indeed, if space is limited, one well-chosen pot beside the door can be just as effective. The aim is to add interest without making the entrance feel crowded, particularly if visitors need room to open the door comfortably.
4. Create a warm welcome with lanterns and lighting
As the evenings draw in, outdoor lighting becomes particularly important. Not only does it help you find your keys on a dark evening, but it can also make the entrance feel warm and inviting.
If you already have a porch light or wall-mounted fitting, give it a clean and check that the bulb is working properly. Replacing a harsh, cold-toned bulb with a warm white option will make the area feel more welcoming.
For an extra touch, consider solar-powered lighting along the pathway and a lantern or two in the entrance, with LED lights to give a gentle glow.
If you’re thinking about adding new outdoor lighting, make sure fittings are suitable for outdoor use and are installed safely. And remember – a little light goes a long way. You want your entrance to feel inviting, not as though you’re illuminating an entire car park!
5. Refresh your front door with seasonal colours
You don’t have to repaint your front door every season to give it a new lease of life, but this is a good opportunity to look at its colour and condition.
If you have a uPVC door, give it a good wash down and make sure the hardware is clean. If you have a painted door, you like the colour and the paint doesn’t look chipped or scratched, just give it a clean and buff up the hardware. If it’s seen better days, now is a good time to refresh it with a new coat of paint.
There has been a lot of research done over front door colours that have the widest appeal. Red consistently scores the highest, with black, blue, green and white close runners-up. Interestingly, a piece of research done in London suggested that blue front doors are best for people selling their homes. Blue represents calm and stability, apparently, and can increase a buyer’s offer– though I am not sure whether a blue front door would translate to a higher offer in Manchester!
If you love a bold shade, choose a classic colour. You can have your pink and orange door wherever you live next!
The secret to a stylish autumn entrance? Keep it simple
It’s tempting to try every seasonal idea you see, particularly when shops and social media are full of autumn inspiration. But the most attractive entrances often rely on just two or three well-chosen details.
A wreath, a clean doormat and a couple of planters may be all you need. Alternatively, a beautiful front door, smart house numbers and warm lighting can make a statement without any seasonal decorations at all.
Think about the style and proportions of your property, too. A traditional Victorian or Edwardian home might suit natural foliage, terracotta pots and a rustic lantern, while a modern home could look better with clean lines, architectural planting and a simple wreath.
Above all, keep paths and steps clear of fallen leaves, remove dead flowers and make sure your entrance is easy and safe to navigate. Autumn weather can make surfaces slippery, so regular sweeping is as practical as it is attractive.
Small changes that make a big first impression
Your front door might be a relatively small part of your home, but it plays an important role in how the whole property is perceived. A tidy, well-maintained and welcoming entrance suggests that the rest of the home has been cared for, too.
And if your home is for sale, or you’re thinking of selling, kerb appeal is worth paying attention to in every season. Buyers often form their first impressions from property photographs, so a smart entrance can help your home look its best before anyone even books a viewing.
At JP & Brimelow, we know the little details can make a difference when presenting a home for sale. This autumn, why not take a fresh look at your front door and see what a few simple changes could achieve?
Sometimes, the warmest welcome is also one of the easiest to create.
