Meet our local artist – Len Grant..

Local Withington artist Len Grant is turning his attention to Chorlton for the fourth in his series of urban sketchbooks.

Len has been urban sketching for over ten years having been a freelance photographer in Manchester for the last three decades.

“I love sitting on my little stool on the street, drawing whatever is in front of me and chatting to whoever stops by,” says Len. “I think people like to see drawings of their local area… places that are very familiar to them but they’ve never seen as an artwork before.”

His first books, about Rusholme and Burton Road, have both sold out and this year he’s published his latest sketchbook all about Manchester’s Northern Quarter. The Chorlton book will, he says, come out next year, all being well.

So far he’s drawn everything from Unicorn Grocery (pictured) to the Tibetan Kitchen in Chorlton Park; from Fell Bar to the barbers at Raised by Wolves, and many more.

“I’ve had a huge response from my Chorlton sketches,” he says. “Everyone has been super encouraging and supportive. And I’ve had some great suggestions of people’s favourite locations for me to sketch, that’s always welcome.”

Len’s Chorlton sketches can been seen on his Instagram account: len_grant and on his website, www.lengrant.co.uk Search ‘Len Grant Big Cartel’ for his online shop.
