A Gentle Guide to Letting Go of Sentimental Items by Serene Space by Sally

Letting go of sentimental items is, without a doubt, one of the hardest parts of organising a home. It is never just “stuff,” is it? It is memories, people, moments in time that we are afraid of losing if we let the physical item go.

As a professional home organiser, I see this every day. But before I did this work, I spent 20 years as a nurse. And honestly, that experience shaped everything about how I support my clients now, especially when it comes to navigating emotional belongings.

Because when you are sorting through sentimental items, you are not just organising, you are feeling.

This is especially true when it comes to bereavement. You might be holding onto a loved one’s clothes, letters, books, or even everyday objects that somehow feel full of their presence. The thought of letting go can bring up guilt, sadness, or even fear. What if I forget them?

If that is you, I want you to know, this is completely normal.

One of the most important things I bring into my sessions is empathy. There is no rush. No pressure. No expectation that you should be able to do this quickly. Grief and memories do not work to a schedule, and neither should you.

I also encourage choosing a few truly meaningful pieces to keep, rather than holding onto everything. This is not about throwing memories away, it is about honouring them. You might choose to create a “memory box,” a dedicated place where you keep those special items together, somewhere you can easily go when you want to feel close to that person again. When everything is kept, it can become overwhelming. But when you carefully select a handful of meaningful pieces, they become even more precious and intentional.

And if you are not ready? That is okay too.

There is absolutely no rule that says you have to declutter sentimental items on anyone else’s timeline. Sometimes the most compassionate thing you can do for yourself is to wait until you feel a little stronger, a little more ready.

My role is simply to support you through that process, with kindness, patience, and understanding. No judgement, ever.

Creating a calm, organised home is not about being ruthless or getting rid of everything. It is about making space for what truly matters, both physically and emotionally.

If you are finding it difficult to let go, please know you are not alone. And you do not have to do it on your own either.
