More Than Just Extra Space: How a Garden Room Can Transform Everyday Living..

Throughout our lives, our homes often need to change with us. Whether we’re working from home, juggling family life, adjusting to quieter times as grown children move out, or just craving a little more breathing space, having somewhere to retreat to can make all the difference.

When we first thought about creating a garden room, I imagined it as somewhere our young adult sons could spend time watching films, pursuing hobbies and enjoying some independence. What I didn’t realise was how much it would change the way all of us live.

Our 4 x 3 metre timber garden room replaced a little-used patio at the bottom of the garden. I thought it would be a lovely addition, but I never imagined it would become one of the most popular spaces in our home. (I’m typing this article from the desk inside!)

It soon became apparent that a garden room isn’t just about adding extra square footage, it’s about creating a space that helps us feel good, focus on something or simply enjoy being at home.

It is somewhere to:

  • Exercise
  • Work
  • Read
  • Think
  • Enjoy a quiet coffee
  • Step away from the demands of everyday life

Initially, many people installed garden rooms as home offices during the pandemic, and they continue to work brilliantly for hybrid working (with a satisfyingly short commute!). But they’ve evolved beyond that, becoming home gyms, yoga studios, creative workspaces, treatment rooms or hobby spaces.

Of course, not everyone has the outdoor space for a purpose-built garden room, and many of the lovely properties I show people each weekend feature compact gardens or courtyards rather than large plots. But I’ve come to realise it’s less about the size of the space and more about making the most of what you have. A sunny corner of a yard with a small table and a few plant pots, a comfortable chair in a quiet room with a nice candle, or a shed or garage that’s been given a new lease of life can all become places to pursue an interest, a passion or a side job – or simply take a little time out.

Personally, our wooden cabin has become my favourite place for exercise, planning content, writing and tackling life admin. I love opening the doors and looking at the garden with a cup of tea, listening to the birds. There’s something so calming about having a space that’s separate from the main house, even though it’s only a few steps away (especially when the laundry baskets are overflowing!). In summer the doors are thrown open to the garden, while in winter it’s a cosy retreat with a blanket and a hot drink.

Our sons have made it their own too, using it for weights and fitness equipment, watching sport and films or simply hanging out.

Whether your garden room is a beautifully designed studio or a simple converted shed or garage, natural light and a comfy chair can be enough to transform how you use your home.

Creating a space for yourself isn’t selfish – it’s one of the simplest ways to support your wellbeing. And while a garden room can certainly add appeal for future buyers, its greatest value is often the enjoyment it brings to everyday life.
